Last time in Pastoral Corner, I talked about how Jesus said He would build His church. This reminds us that it is by His power and grace that the church moves forward. It’s encouraging because even when our efforts seem small or fruitless, God can produce amazing results beyond what we can imagine.
But there is a specific way in which Christ builds His church. In Matthew 16:18, Jesus says He will build His church on Peter (or some would interpret its actually Peter’s confession of faith). In Protestantism, we believe this refers to the once-for-all foundation laid by the apostles and prophets (see Ephesians 2:20), with Peter representing them, and Jesus Christ as the corner stone. Their inspired teachings, now recorded in the New Testament, form the authoritative foundation for Christian faith and practice. With the death of the apostles and the completion of the New Testament, their unique foundational authority is now preserved in Scripture. Today, to be “built on the foundation of the apostles” means to be built on the Word they recorded, which witness to the person and work of Christ.
In practical terms, this means that if our efforts to advance God’s kingdom deviate from the written revelation handed down to us, they will ultimately be ineffective. Sidelining, distorting, or undermining the apostolic witness leads to no lasting impact — no true fruit from our labor. God is glorified when we faithfully speak and live out His revelation, which always points to His Son, who is the Word made flesh.
The apostolic witness, preserved in Scripture, is often called “the faith” that was once for all delivered to the saints (Jude 3). We are called to “contend for” and “guard” this faith. In other words, the testimony to the person and work of Christ must remain unadulterated and at the very center of everything we teach and do. And we seek to grasp “this faith”, Christ’s glory captures our hearts. Our faith in Him and love for Him grow, and from that heart flows a resolve for good and the good works prompted by our faith (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12). God blesses this work with His power so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12). And that is when our work is truly fruitful.

不過,基督建造祂的教會,是有一定方式的。在馬太福音16章18節,耶穌說祂要把教會建造在彼得身上(有人也解釋為建造在彼得的信仰告白上)。按照新教的理解,這是指使徒和先知所立下的那一次性根基(參見以弗所書2:20), 而這根基是立在基督自己身上。使徒受聖靈默示的教導,如今都記錄在新約聖經裡,成為信仰和生活的最高權威。隨著使徒們的離世和新約的完成,他們獨特的根基性權威如今就保存在聖經當中。所以今天所說的“建造在使徒和先知的根基上”,就是建造在他們所留下、見證基督的話語上 。
落實到生活裡,這就意味著:如果我們推動神國的努力偏離了神所賜下的聖經啟示,最後一定是徒勞的。如果我們忽略、扭曲或削弱使徒和先知的見證,我們的勞苦就不會有持久的影響 —— 也結不出真正的果子。神得榮耀,是在我們忠心宣講並活出祂的啟示的時候;而這啟示始終都指向祂的兒子 —— 那位道成肉身的基督。
而這使徒的見證保存在聖經中,聖經稱之為“那一次交付聖徒的真道”(猶大書3節)。我們被呼召,要為這真道竭力爭辯,也要持守這信仰。對基督的位格和工作所留下的見證,必須保持純正,並成為我們一切教導與行動的核心。當我們專心去認識這真道時,祂的榮耀就吸引我們的心。我們對祂的信心和愛心會更加增長,而從這樣的心,就會湧出行善的心志, 和出於信心的工作(帖撒羅尼迦後書1:11-12)。神會用祂的大能來賜福,叫我們主耶穌的名得著榮耀(帖撒羅尼迦後書1:11-12)。那時候,我們的事奉才真正結出果子。
