Dear brothers and sisters,

Last time in the Pastoral Corner, I shared that Christ builds His church in a specific way: through the Word of God, which testifies to His Person and Work. We see this clearly in Acts 19:20: “So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.” It is the message of Christ that overcomes the sinful rebellion of human hearts. Wherever the Word of God spreads, the church is being built.

One common obstacle to maintaining this Word-centered ministry mindset is the belief that the Holy Spirit operates as an independent source of revelation apart from Christ’s testimony already given in Scripture (Ephesians 2). When we begin to think that the written Word is insufficient, we sideline it and start chasing direct supernatural experiences or new “revelations.”

Hebrews 1 teaches that God’s final and authoritative revelation is found in His Son. According to John 16:13–15, the Spirit’s role is to take what belongs to Christ and make it known to us. The Spirit does not bring new revelation, because Christ has already given His complete and foundational revelation to the church. Recognizing this truth is crucial for the health of the church.

As we look ahead, our church theme for 2026 is to abide in Christ (and to grow in love). In both John 8:31–32 and John 15:4–10, Jesus makes it clear that abiding in Him means abiding in His Word. If this is true for the whole church, it is certainly true for our children’s ministry. The question then becomes: how do we ensure that the Word remains central in all we do with the children? In Creature of the Word, Matt Chandler offers some helpful insights.

First, we must approach our role with seriousness and conviction. Children’s ministry is often treated as a “support service” rather than a mission—perhaps even a primary mission. Our goal is not simply to keep children occupied so that “real” ministry can take place with adults. Children are not distractions; they are sinful human beings in desperate need of the Word—the gospel of God’s Son.

Second, we must approach our role with patience and steadfastness. Behavior modification is not our primary objective. What we aim for is heart transformation through the Word. Behavior modification is appealing because it produces immediate, visible results that please adults. But true transformation is the Spirit’s steady, lifelong work through the Word—a work that changes hearts from the inside out. As Matt Chandler wisely reminds us, we do not want to raise little Pharisees with changed behavior but unchanged hearts.

展望2026年，我們教會的主題是「連於基督, 愛中建立」。在約翰福音8:31-32與15:4-10中，耶穌清楚地教導我們，連於基督就是連於祂的話語。如果這對整個教會都是真實的，那麼對我們的兒童事工更是如此。問題隨之而來：我們如何確保神的話語在我們與孩子的事工中始終居於核心地位？在《Creature of the Word》一書中，Matt Chandler提供了一些非常有幫助的洞見。

首先，我們必須以嚴肅與信念來看待自己的角色。兒童事工常常被視為「支援性服事」，而不是一項使命 —— 甚至可能是一項主要的使命。我們的目標不只是讓孩子們有事可做，好讓「真正的」事工可以在成人中進行。孩子不是干擾或附屬的對象；他們同樣是有罪的人，迫切需要神的話語 —— 神兒子的福音。

其次，我們必須以耐心與堅持來承擔這份事奉。行為的改變並不是我們的首要目標；我們所追求的是藉著神的話語帶來內心的轉化。行為上的改變之所以吸引人，是因為它能帶來立即、可見、令成人滿意的結果。然而，真正的轉化是聖靈透過神的話語所進行那穩定而長久的工作 —— 這是一種從內而外改變人心的工作。正如Matt Chandler明智地提醒我們，我們不希望培養出只是行為改變、內心卻未曾更新的「小法利賽人」。
