"I will build My church"

Most of us are involved in church ministry in one way or another — whether it’s teaching children or leading adult Bible studies, serving the young or assisting seniors, setting up chairs and tables for gatherings or managing the church’s finances. We are all busy serving in different capacities. Yet, no matter what role we play or how we serve, there is one truth we must always keep in mind: it is the Lord who is building His church. The decisive factor in all our work is the Lord’s unwavering commitment to His church.

In Matthew 16:17–18, Jesus said to Peter:
“Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Here, Jesus makes it clear that He Himself is laying the foundation and will build His church.

This truth had already been prophesied by Zechariah, who saw in a vision that the Messiah would build the Temple of the Lord (Zechariah 6:12-13).

We know that every building project requires deep commitment. So how did Jesus commit Himself to building His church?

First, He gave His very life so that we might have life and flourish through Him. His sacrifice on the cross was not only a once-for-all atonement for our sins — it was the beginning of an ongoing work. He continues even now to intercede for His people, empowering them to fulfill His mission, and reigning over all things for the advance of His kingdom.

Second, He chose and empowered His own messengers. In Matthew 16, Peter — and by extension the other apostles—was entrusted with the gospel message. Their witness, as Paul tells us in Ephesians, forms the foundation of the church (Ephesians 2:20). But their effectiveness didn’t come from their own strength. When Peter’s faith faltered, it was Jesus’ intercession that restored him and enabled him to fulfill his apostolic calling (Luke 22:31-32). Likewise, Paul was confident that his labor would bear fruit because Christ Himself was at work through him.

Third, Christ continues to empower those who believe the apostles’ message to carry on the task of making disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18-20). That’s why Paul writes in Ephesians that every believer is gifted by the risen Christ for the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12). In other words, every ministry gift we possess today is given by Christ for the building up of His church.

So what difference does this make?
When we serve in the church, we often think first of our own commitment or passion. We imagine that ministry “success” depends on how hard we work. We may see the power of Christ as something that comes alongside our effort to give it a boost. But in reality, it’s the other way around.

It is Christ’s commitment that drives the church’s growth. His zeal for the church, His commitment to His kingdom, is what makes our work both possible, meaningful and fruitful. This doesn’t mean we can be passive — Jesus’ parable of the talents reminds us that faithfulness is expected. But it’s precisely by understanding the depth of our Lord’s commitment that our own zeal is ignited. His commitment not only makes our service meaningful and effective, it makes us want to serve.

As Paul put it in Colossians 1:29:
"For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me."

Because of Him, we can serve with confidence, knowing that our work has meaning and power beyond what we can see.
