Dear brothers and sisters,

Last time in the Pastoral Corner I shared that God builds His church through His Word, which bears witness about Christ (John 5:39), Therefore, God's Word must remain central in our ministry to children.

One key decision in children’s ministry is what teaching materials or curriculum to use. Discernment is required because materials are not neutral: they can either serve the glory of God by faithfully presenting Him as He has revealed Himself, or they can subtly reshape our understanding of Him around our felt needs. This is where we must be alert to “self-help” versions of Christianity. Our current culture is saturated with materials marketed as Christian that turn the historic Christian faith into a tool for self-fulfillment, emotional affirmation, and personal success, rather than calling people to repentance, holiness, and the cross. Such materials treat Christianity as a means of self-affirmation or getting what we want. In doing so, they treat God as a servant of felt needs rather than the holy Lord who is to be honored in our hearts.

The only way to avoid that counterfeit gospel is to teach the person and work of Christ. That means we must teach uncomfortable but essential truths: sin, curse our need for redemption, substitutionary atonement, and the necessity of a new birth. Paul puts this forcefully in 1 Corinthians 2:1–2, saying he determined “not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” Though hyperbolic, his words show that the cross is central in all faithful ministry. Likewise, in 1 Corinthians 15:2–4 Paul insists that the death and resurrection of Christ are “of first importance,” as it is the message through which God creates faith, forgives sins, and gives eternal life. As Romans 10:17 says, “faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”

Practically, this means we look for materials that clearly present sin and mercy together, and that point children to Christ’s finished work in age-appropriate ways, rather than merely affirming feelings or behavior. It also means we avoid curricula that reduce the gospel to moral tips, emotional affirmation, or self-help formulas for personal success.

With the windows of opportunity ahead — summer camp, the fall children’s outreach club, and Chinese school — let us focus on helping children see the glory and beauty of Christ. This is not accomplished by human planning alone. Please pray that the gospel would be taught clearly, and that through the work of the Spirit the children would find Christ far more precious than anything the world can offer (1Cor 12:3, John 15:26).
