Dear Brothers & Sisters,
Last Sunday, we entered the second week of Advent of Peace. Do you have peace? As we watch the news around the world, peace is disturbed by war, natural disasters, accidents, and tragedy. Without solutions to the problems, people sometimes choose to numb themselves or pretend everything is fine. God once declared through Jeremiah, “From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit. They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace.” (Jeremiah 6:13-14). These false prophets are everywhere. They give many promises, philosophies, religions, scientific solutions, advertisements, entertainment, and even self-persuasion through positivity!
When Jesus announced he would be betrayed into the hands of his enemies, his disciples were troubled. For they would not know what to do without their Lord Jesus Christ. Then Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Jesus was assuring them that he would be with them and not forsake them (John 14:25-27). He would give them security through the Holy Spirit, our Counsellor, to remind them of the promises and teachings in the Scripture. Most of us have inherited this Covenant of God through faith in Jesus Christ, so that we may be reconciled to God. This is the first peace we have received that the world cannot offer, which is righteousness through faith. However, have you received the second peace that Jesus was talking about?
How do I know if I have received the second peace? We can actually test whether we have this peace with the following questions: 1) When life storms are happening, do you have peace that comes from Jesus Christ? Instead of worrying, you feel at peace because the Holy Spirit reminds you of certain Bible verses to comfort you. 2) Do you have peace with the people in your life? In other words, do you have good relationships with individuals whom God has put in your life? We may not realize this, one of the reasons why we have good relationships with others is that the Holy Spirit lives with us and will be in us (John 14:17). 3) Do you make efforts to make peace with others? Perhaps this is the most obvious indicator of whether we have peace or not. One of the marks Christians must have is to be peacemakers, for we will be recognized by the world as children of God (Matthew 5:9).
In a world that is without peace, the church must display just the opposite. When the world does not have a solution for how to resolve conflicts, the church must teach the world how peace can be achieved. That’s right, Jesus established the church for sinners to come practice how to be peacemakers. In other words, the church is made up of sinners, so it is impossible to avoid being offended. While worldly logic tells us to give up and leave the church, our Lord Jesus expects us to find ways to help make it easier for our brothers and sisters to join in the effort to make peace and forgive one another! Jesus once said, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.” (Matthew 12:25).
As we are trying to rebuild our church, each member of Bethel must examine whether efforts have been made intentionally to resolve differences so that we may truly make disciples through setting examples to new Christians who put their faith in the teaching of Jesus Christ. May each member of the church renew our commitment to follow the footsteps of Jesus Christ.
The leadership team needs your feedback and observation to help with the discernment process of how we can best serve. If there is something God has put into your heart, please do not hesitate to talk with the pastoral team. We, as the pastoral team, would love to pray and walk alongside you and see how we can empower more people to serve. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to one of the pastors.
