Nope. You do not need to be Chinese to visit.
Despite the “Chinese” in our name and our general Asian appearance, many of us in the English-speaking congregation were born in Canada and have never been to China. Some other of us moved here from all over Asia. Most of us speak awful Chinese, if at all. (We can tell you stories.) And besides spending our childhood straddling between the western culture and the immigrant values of our parents, we basically face the same everyday problems you do.
You may have to put up with someone from one of the Chinese-speaking congregations babble at you in Chinese at the Church foyer, and you may need to learn to eat with chopsticks if you don’t want to starve to death at the Church anniversaries dinner. Other than these adventures, you are good to visit as you are.
Sunday Morning Worship Gathering is at 11:40 AM – a time we spend before God and with each other in prayer, songs and reflection. The mood is relaxed, as is the dress code. While there is time to meet and greet people before and after the gathering, you are free to be as involved or as anonymous as you like. No one will make you stand or speak in front of everybody.
At 10 AM every Sunday before the Worship Gathering, there is Sunday School. But don’t let the “School” scare you. It’s really a time to talk to each other about what’s happening in our lives. We try to lend support and help each other figure out what or if God has anything to say about what we grapple with. Once again, you can say as much or as little as you feel comfortable.
Every Friday at 7:30 PM, we gather after a week of work to kick back and hang out with each other. The evening begins with a short time of prayer and songs, followed by time spent in smaller groups. There are four community groups currently:
Grapes
– for grown ups
Samuel – for Collegians and young working folk
Jordan – Senior Highschool and young College age
Joseph – Highschool
Depending on the week, the groups may be praying, playing or learning together. This is a time to visit if you are interested in making friends.
If you are looking for saints – you’ll be disappointed. We are just ordinary folk trying to make sense of our lives and our relationship with God and each other. If that sounds like you, then you have come to the right group of people.
See you
soon!
